un·or·tho·dox
contrary to what is usual, traditional, or accepted; not orthodox
These are the first few pieces of my current body of work, Unorthodox.Fused together by my love for art history and admiration of the art deco movement of the 20s, this body of work has come about. The goal is not to replace or overshadow the work of the greats of that movement, nor to overwrite the styles or traditions, but instead to reintroduce the style and traditions of this iconic art movement in a contemporary, unorthodox way to garner the gaze of a new generation of art surveyors. The influence of art deco bled into all areas: architecture, interior design, jewelry, couture, and graphic arts. And that influence is something that cannot be forgotten or ignored 100 years later. My goal as a contemporary artist is to create a body of work that brings forth a modern play on that tradition. The artists and designers of that movement frequently used bold, geometric patterns, sharp lines, and contrasting colors as staples, which continue to align with so much contemporary design and art today, including my own.
